HOST Cryptid Critter Crawl presents, Mothman’s Chrysalis
HOST Mothman. A winged mothlike cryptid walking on two legs. Roughly the size of a person. Which person? Nobody knows. But what is known is they are person-sized, roughly. As described by eye-witnesses, the museum interns.
INTERN 1 They were like, person-sized.
INTERN 2 Roughly.
INTERN 3 Yeah!
INTERN 1 And they had, like, big, like wings. Big BIG wings.
INTERN 2 Super furry wings!
INTERN 3 Yeah yeah!
INTERN 2 And don’t forget the glowing eyes.
INTERN 3 Yeah yeah. Yeah yeah!
INTERN 2 Bright red glowing eyes!
INTERN 3 Yeaaaah!
INTERN 1 I saw, like, my, like future in those eyes yinz! I, like, become like a real estate agent! For real real… estate.
INTERN 3 Yeah?
HOST It’s said the Mothman can see the future, revealing glimpses of coming events to those with whom they encounter. But to understand how it is the Mothman sees the future, one must first learn of their difficult past, as told to us by Professional Amateur Historian, Gigi Just-Gigi.
GIGI Long before the Mothman was known as Mothman, they were known as... the Caterpillar Kid. A large, roughly person-sized caterpillar who spent much time just chillin’ in the branches, munching on leaves. But all that was before the pupal stage.
IMANI When a caterpillar is ready for the transition into its next physical state, it must first go through the pupal stage by forming a chrysalis.
HOST Explains Youth Prodigy, Child Scientist, Imani Smarts.
IMANI The chrysalis is a beautiful shell for the caterpillar body. Actually, it is the caterpillar’s body, split open and hardened to create a safe space for the transition to occur.
GIGI All the other caterpillars would say, “Caterpillar kid, you will make the most graceful roughly person-sized Butterfly when you emerge.” But deep down inside, the Caterpillar Kid knew they were not a butterfly. Yet, again and again, the much smaller caterpillars would say… “nooooo Caterpillar Kid. You are roughly person-sized, but a butterfly nonetheless. And a butterfly you must be.”
IMANI The pupal stage can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. But when the new lifeform is ready, it will break free, discarding its previous form, and take flight.
GIGI What a strange gift to truly see one’s true self. To know what one will become. For when Caterpillar Kid burst through the hard shell of their chrysalis, it was not a butterfly that emerged from that hardened discarded self, No, it was a moth. And it was, roughly, person-sized.
HOST Seeing the future doesn’t have to be magic. Sometimes all it takes is to look deep down inside yourself to find yourself, then simply decide, who you are... is who you will be.
INTERN 1 Like… real estate.
INTERN 3 Yeah yeah.
INTERN 1 It makes, like, so much, like, sense.
INTERN 2 You need to get some cards printed.
INTERN 3 Yeah.
